            Pizza in Rome

Buonasera! Stasera andiamo in pizzeria, vieni anche tu?

Going out for a pizza in Rome is an experience. Everybody gets their own pizza. There are two "sit-down" versions: Roman and Naples style. For Romans, Romana (slightly thinner and crunchier) is traditional, and to be had at your local neighborhood place, which is chaotic, fast paced and usually takes no reservations. But the most praised pizza comes from Naples, where it was invented sometime in the 1800s. Napoletana is chewy, with a thicker, (some say better) sourdough crust to be had with tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella and basil. In Rome you can find both versions.

If you are very hungry, when at a pizzeria get some typical antipasti. My favorites are suppli (breaded, deep fried risotto ball with tomato sauce and a little mozzarella) fiori di zucca (a deep-fried, battered, zucchini flower stuffed with melted mozzarella and a hint of anchovy) or a classic bruschetta al pomodoro (toasted or grilled bread with garlic, fresh tomatoes, basil, salt, extra virgin olive oil).

For a light (and vegan) pizza, order a marinara (tomato sauce, garlic, oregano, extra virgin olive oil) with a vegetable if you want.

For a classic, go with the margherita which is tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.

As a novelty, get a capricciosa: tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, prosciutto, mushrooms, artichokes, some olives and a half hard boiled egg on top.
